Dankwarderode Castle
This wellknown medieval ensemble is Brunswick's 'best room', the square northern base is completed with some
pittoresque half-timbered houses. Each December used for the Christmas market, probably Northern Germany's
most famous one. Also, main open air cultural events are arranged within this charming atmosphere. A concert
suddenly could be accompanied by the impressing big bell's low bass. At the back right the newer "Rathaus"
(town hall), built in 1902 in neogothic style.

Heinrich der Löwe (Henry the Lion) in Braunschweig (Dankwarderode) and the Landgraves of Thüringen in
Eisenach (Wartburg) built particularly prestigous palaces - the Wartburg [12] is one the most famous castles in
Germany from that time period. An important player in the building of castles were the orders, especially the
Teutonic Knights who established many castles in the eastern parts of the Empire which became colonised under
their auspices.
